Watch: Eagles 'tush push' results in chaos as referee threatens to award score

The Philadelphia Eagles' 'tush push' is one of the most unstoppable plays in the NFL. They successfully pulled off another one on Sunday afternoon in the NFC Championship Game against the Washington Commanders when quarterback Jalen Hurts scored a touchdown from one yard out.

But there was nothing routine about this particular version of it.

It quickly devolved into chaos.

With the Commanders trailing by 11 points in the fourth quarter and desperate to make a goal-line stand, they kept trying to time the snap count in an effort to stuff Hurts.

It failed embarrassingly and resulted in referee Shawn Hochuli threatening to award a score for the Eagles before they finally pushed it across for a touchdown.

First, you can watch the entire sequence here:

Now the full play-by-play run down of what happened here.

  • The Commanders stopped Hurts on the first attempt, only to have the play be negated because they had lined up offside giving the Eagles another 1st-and-goal from the half-yard line.
  • They stopped Hurts again on the next play after he bobbled the snap, setting up up a 2nd-and-goal from the one. That is where the madness started.
  • On the next two plays linebacker Frankie Luvu attempted to jump over the line at the snap but was early on both attempts. That resulted in Hochuli threatening an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty if he did it again.
  • On the following snap, the Eagles ran the clock down with hard counts, resulting in yet another offside penalty on Washington. That was four in a row.

That was when Hochuli threatened to award the Eagles a score "if that behavior" continued.

The next play Hurts finally scored.

As for Hochuli's threat of an awarded score, Rule 12, Section 3, Article 4 of the NFL rule book is one that allows a referee to make that decision.

The Commanders had a lot of problems on Sunday, ranging from game-changing turnovers to a defense that was unable to stop the Eagles offense. That sequence was not only another example of the latter problem, it resulted in them getting embarrassed by both the Eagles and the referees.
