Jets' Aaron Glenn addresses uncertain future of Aaron Rodgers

It was reported on Sunday that recently-hired New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn "is open to" veteran Aaron Rodgers serving as the club's Week 1 starting quarterback for a third-straight year and that Glenn wants to "come up with a decision" regarding the Rodgers matter "sooner than later."

During a Monday afternoon news conference that introduced both Glenn and new Jets general manager Darren Mougey to media members, Glenn addressed Rodgers' uncertain future.

"Aaron Rodgers will be talked about," Glenn said, as shared by Albert Bainbridge IV of NorthJersey.com. "We've already had that communication with Rodgers. As we continue to look at the roster we'll make decisions accordingly."

Rodgers dealt with numerous significant physical setbacks over his first two seasons with the Jets, turned 41 years old in December and hasn't yet publicly revealed whether or not he plans to extend his playing career beyond the 2024 campaign. Numerous reports surfaced long before the Jets hired Glenn and Mougey claiming that team owner Woody Johnson wants to move on from Rodgers this offseason but will ultimately let the team's new regime make the final call about the future Hall of Famer.

Retired wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson shared a locker room with Glenn when both played for the Jets in the 1990s. Johnson guaranteed last week that Glenn "will not start off his career with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback in September," but reporters such as ESPN's Rich Cimini have pointed out that the Jets would "be hard-pressed to find a better quarterback in the offseason market" if they show Rodgers the door.

"Me and (Mougey) are gonna sit and talk about the whole roster," Glenn added on Monday. "When it comes to the roster in general, we're looking forward to that process. I can't tell you how long that process will be but the thing is, we're going to make sure we get the right answer."

The new league year opens on March 12, so Glenn and Mougey have some time to chat with Rodgers about the club's quarterback situation. Even if everyone agrees Rodgers should enter the summer as New York's QB1, he likely will be asked to mentor both a rookie and 2024 fifth-round draft pick Jordan Travis.

Travis spent his rookie season recovering from a serious left leg injury he suffered in the fall of 2023.
