Retired running back Brandon Jacobs earned two Super Bowl rings as a member of the New York Giants, so it's understandable he received quite a bit of criticism from Big Blue fans when he admitted via X (formerly known as Twitter) that he'll be rooting for former Giant and current Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley to get his hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy regarding Philadelphia's Super Bowl LIX matchup versus the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jacobs later explained his mindset in a video he posted on the social media platform.
"I totally understand where the hate is coming from on the hate for the Eagles," Jacobs said while addressing Giants supporters, as shared by Jimmy Hascup of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "I get it. You guys all grew up Giant fans. But at the end of the day, I’m so tired of the Kansas City Chiefs and what all has been done. I’m not taking any credit away from anybody. I think (Patrick) Mahomes is great. I think they got a great defense. There’s always some type of some type of bull---- that goes on, you know, someone, there’s always some kind of controversial calls."
Jacobs isn't alone in that pockets of non-Chiefs fans have insisted they'll also be cheering for the Eagles on Feb. 9, in part because Kansas City allegedly gets calls in the club's favor during games and also because the AFC West side is the league's current dynasty. As for Barkley, he never played beyond the divisional round of a postseason tournament when he featured for the Giants from 2018 up until he joined the Eagles last offseason.
He's now four quarters of action away from football immortality.
"I want him to know what it feels like to be able to win a championship, a Super Bowl," Jacobs said about Barkley during the video. "I think he’s a generational talent and he’s never going to be recognized 'great,' I guess you can call it — people always talk about this ring talk."
Needless to say, many Giants fans disagree with Jacobs simply because they don't want to see a rival club celebrate a championship as their favorite team is still licking its wounds coming off a 3-14 season. Perhaps Jacobs will keep it to himself if he has reasons to be happy for Barkley on the second Sunday of February.
