Watch: Arizona-Arizona State overshadowed by headbutt, multiple ejections

Even in a heated rivalry, Arizona State guard BJ Freeman took things too far in the Sun Devils' 81-72 loss to Arizona on Saturday.

With 30 seconds remaining, Freeman headbutted Wildcats guard Caleb Love after Love said something to him. Following a replay review, officials ejected both players.

Afterward, Arizona State head coach Bobby Hurley and Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd agreed to skip the typical handshake line and head straight toward the locker room to a chorus of boos from the Sun Devils home crowd.

Hurley discussed the game's ending in a news conference following the game and explained his decision to go directly to the locker room.

"It was relentless, constant chatter from a couple of the Arizona players that was not being policed properly," Hurley said. "And, of course, they're gonna be happy with winning, but it was done with no class."

Arizona (15-6, 9-1 Big 12) has now won nine of its last 10 games against its in-state rival. The Wildcats are one of the country's hottest teams, winning 11 of their last 12 games after a 4-5 start to the season.

Meanwhile, Arizona State (12-9, 3-7 Big 12) has lost six of its last eight games and is 4-9 since starting the season 8-1.

With the season spiraling, it's understandable — if not justifiable — that the Sun Devils' frustration boiled over against the Wildcats.

It's also the second high-profile ugly ending between the two in-state rivals this calendar year.

In November 2024, Arizona State planted a pitchfork at midfield following an 49-7 football win over Arizona, prompting an on-field melee.

Following that Sun Devils display, it was karmic justice for Arizona to celebrate on Arizona State's home court.

If Hurley is concerned about class, he should teach his team how to lose with some.
