Iowa women upset No. 4 USC with former star in attendance

On Sunday, Iowa women's basketball pulled off a 76-69 upset of No. 4 USC with former star Caitlin Clark in attendance for her jersey retirement.

The fact this was the first time Iowa has defeated an AP top five opponent while unranked since 2001 shows how unlikely this upset was.

While Iowa only shot 27.8 percent from deep, it was the sharpshooting from senior guard Lucy Olsen that stood out. Olsen had a season-high 28 points (10-of-18 FG). Olsen showed off her moves with this bucket to put Iowa in the lead, 33-32, early in the third quarter.

Olsen followed that up as the third quarter ended with this pull-up jumper to give the Hawkeyes a 51-50 lead.

For the Trojans, this was their first loss of conference play. A slow start to the game was a sign of things to come for USC. Iowa got out to a 23-4 lead with 7:08 left in the first half, forcing the Trojans to play from behind in the road environment.

Star sophomore JuJu Watkins had 27 points (8-of-22 FG) and only shot 1-of-7 from deep. Three-point shooting continues to hold this team back. USC was 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) on Sunday and has only made 32.8 percent of its long-range shots this season.

Following its second loss of the season, USC (19-2, 9-1 Big Ten) needs to get off to a quicker start than it did against Iowa. With four of its final seven games coming against ranked opponents, including two against No. 1 UCLA, USC must find more production from deep and overcome its slow starts.

Iowa (15-7, 5-6 Big Ten) has not had the same level of success as it did with Clark after experiencing a five-game losing streak prior to its current stretch of three straight wins. Despite the inconsistent season up to this point, the Hawkeyes got their biggest win of the season with their former star in attendance to witness it on a special day for the Iowa program.
