Could Luka Doncic trade be as beneficial for Lakers as another blockbuster deal nearly 50 years ago?

Will the Luka Doncic trade benefit the Los Angeles Lakers as much as the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar deal nearly 50 years ago?

On Saturday night, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported the Dallas Mavericks dealt the star guard to the Lakers for forward/center Anthony Davis and more.

On June 16, 1975, the Milwaukee Bucks sent Abdul-Jabbar to the Lakers along with backup center Walt Wesley for center Elmore Smith, guard Brian Winters, forward Dave Meyers and forward Junior Bridgeman.

Abdul-Jabbar — who carried the Bucks to their first title as Lew Alcindor during the 1970-71 season — said he needed a change of scenery.

"I'm not criticizing the people here," the center said after the trade, via Steve Cady of The New York Times. "But Milwaukee is not what I'm all about. The things I relate to aren't in Milwaukee."

After the Lakers paired Abdul-Jabbar with point guard Magic Johnson during the 1979-80 season, the duo would go on to win five titles for the Lakers.

The Bucks, meanwhile, wouldn't win another title until the 2020-21 season. In a May 2020 article, Bleacher Report's NBA staff listed the Abdul-Jabbar trade as one of the three most lopsided of the '70s.

Like Abdul-Jabbar, Doncic could help the Lakers add more championship banners. He also gives the franchise a potential heir apparent for 40-year-old small forward LeBron James.

In his first seven seasons with the Mavericks, the 25-year-old won 2018-19 Rookie of the Year and made first-team All-NBA five times.

Doncic hasn't played since suffering a calf injury on Christmas Day. Longtime NBA reporter Marc Stein tweeted Doncic was aiming for a Feb. 8 return before he was traded to L.A. In his first 22 games, he averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists per game.

Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison told ESPN's Dave McMenamin, "Getting an All-Defensive" center in Davis gives them a better chance to win the NBA Finals.

Davis, however, is injury-prone. In 13 seasons with the Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans, the 31-year-old has only played in 75 regular-season games or more three times. This season, he has missed five games because of calf, foot and abdominal issues.

Harrison's move could become one of the worst in league history, especially if it launches another Lakers dynasty.
