De'Aaron Fox provides Spurs with perfect co-star for Victor Wembanyama

It may not have the historical significance of the trade the Mavericks and Lakers pulled off, but the Kings capped off a wild NBA weekend by dealing De'Aaron Fox to the Spurs on Sunday. This move comes only a few days after ESPN's Shams Charania reported Sacramento was open to trading Fox.

Fox ended up in San Antonio as a part of a three-team deal that also sent the Chicago Bulls' Zach LaVine and three future first-round picks (2025, 2027 and 2031) to the Kings.

So while the Kings are clearly rebuilding and starting all over once again, Fox will now have a chance to help create the next great run for the Spurs franchise.

Even though most blockbuster midseason trades are often about a team trying to get over the hump and win right now, this one is more geared toward the future. At only 27, Fox is just entering his prime years.

Fox, who still has another year on his current contract, is averaging exactly 25 points on 46.9% from the field, 6.1 assists and five rebounds per game in 45 games so far this season. He should prove to be the perfect compliment for 2023 first overall pick Victor Wembanyama.

Fox will provide the Spurs with a deadly shooter who can create shots for himself as well as his teammates. His presence will keep opponents honest and create even more space for Wembanyama to work. Wembanyama's ability to block shots should also offer more second-chance looks for Fox.

When the Spurs signed Chris Paul, the idea was for the future Hall of Famer to help Wembanyama take his game to another level. Paul has done that, mentoring the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year on and off the court. But the addition of Paul was never intended to be a long-term answer at point guard.

That's where Fox comes in, and all signs point to his interest in sticking around since the Spurs were on his list of preferred destinations

With San Antonio sitting in the No. 12 spot in the West, it's possible Fox could help get the Spurs into the play-in picture. However, anything this team accomplishes this season is a bonus and a likely preview of what's ahead.

Fox and Wembanyama have all the makings of being the perfect co-stars as San Antonio looks to be a force to be recognized with for years to come.
