Seven years after failed offer sheet, Kings finally get Zach LaVine

In 2018, the Sacramento Kings signed 23-year-old free agent Zach LaVine to a massive offer sheet, only to see the Chicago Bulls match. Nearly seven years later, LaVine is finally a King.

Back in 2018, LaVine was a player with massive potential who hadn't done much in the NBA, besides winning two dunk contests. He averaged 13.7 points in his first three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves and suffered an ACL tear during his third season. In 24 games with the Bulls the next year, he averaged 16.7 points and barely shot over 40%.

But the Bulls matched the offer and LaVine blossomed into a scorer, putting up 23.7 points the next season. He made the All-Star team in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, though injuries and the five-year max contract he signed in 2022 have made him less desirable for the Bulls.

Now he joins former Bulls teammate DeMar Derozan on a 24-24 Kings team that's still trying to compete for the playoffs after trading De'Aaron Fox. LaVine is having a bounce back season, averaging 24 points and shooting 44.6% from three-point range.

Losing Fox, who effectively forced his way to the San Antonio Spurs, will hurt the Kings. But the shooting of LaVine will greatly help the Kings, who are 22nd in made three-pointers and 24th in three-point percentage.

Defense may be another story, but the Kings managed to stock up on draft picks in the deal without losing a lot of offense.

Plus, LaVine will get to experience life in Sacramento, see the state capitol, visit the Railroad Museum and even see an A's game at Raley Park. It took a long time to get there, but LaVine is finally a Sacramento King.
