After giving up a season-high 55 points to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game, the Commanders defense could use a little help, something the unit will get according to one recent mock draft.
To be fair, Washington's defense made great strides this year. After allowing a league-high 30.5 points and 388.9 yards per game under Ron Rivera in 2023, the team allowed just 326.9 yards and 23 points per game under new head coach Dan Quinn.
Unfortunately, Quinn stands to lose a pair of free-agent edge-rushers in Clelin Ferrell and Dante Fowler Jr. in the offseason, which leads Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus to believe the Commanders will select Georgia’s Mykel Williams with the 29th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Cameron calls the 6-foot-5, 265-pound defensive end an "explosive, high-ceiling pass rusher with the violent playing style Quinn covets." While he admits Williams needs more development as a pass-rusher, Cameron believes he’s already an excellent run defender, noting Williams’ run-defense grade ranked in the 97th percentile at his position last season.
The Columbus, Ga., native had 65 tackles and 14 sacks in three years as a Bulldog and earned Second Team All-SEC honors in 2023 and 2024. Williams is a talented, hard-working athlete with range and quickness that allows him to cover lots of ground, but he will need to increase his upper-body strength to consistently get past NFL blockers.
NFL Network’s Lance Zierlein also sees Williams as an upside prospect who needs more snaps and time to fill out his frame.
"He’s not there yet," Zierlein says, "but Williams' improvement to become an impactful 4-3 base end feels inevitable."
PFF has Williams rated as the fourth-best edge defender in this year’s draft and the 18th-best prospect overall. Of course, with $82M of available cap space for 2025, Washington could turn to free agents to help rebuild its defense but a player with Williams' upside could be hard to resist so late in the first round.
