John Calipari, Arkansas survive late surge to beat Texas

Arkansas came away with a 78-70 victory over Texas on Wednesday in a game that probably shouldn't have been as close as it ended up being.

The Razorbacks led by as many as 23 points in the second half, but a second-half surge from the Longhorns was bolstered by a missed free throw from Arkansas forward Zvonimir Ivisic with 41 seconds to go. Texas trailed by just five and had an opportunity to make it a one-possession game, but an ill-advised pass by Julian Terry ended up being the nail in the coffin.

The win is Arkansas' third over the last four games and its second consecutive road win.

FAU transfer guard Johnell Davis continued his recent hot streak, pouring in 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Davis made four three-pointers in the second half.

Forward Adou Thiero (14 points) and guard D.J. Wagner (13 points) were the other Razorbacks to reach double figures.

Texas guard Tre Johnson led the Longhorns with 25 points, though the star freshman only shot 6-of-22 from the field.

The game was the first meeting between the former Southwest Conference foes since Texas joined the SEC. The Longhorns will travel to Fayetteville for a rematch on Feb. 26.

Arkansas (14-8, 3-6 SEC) will be back inside the friendly confines of Bud Walton Arena on Saturday for a matchup with No. 3 Alabama that should have the Basketball Palace of Mid-America rocking.
