Latest LeBron James record may be his greatest longevity feat

LeBron James on Thursday became the oldest player in history to score 40 points in an NBA regular-season game. The feat came a little over 21 years after he became the youngest to achieve the same distinction.

The evergreen superstar dropped a season-high 42 points, 17 rebounds and eight assists in the Lakers' 120-112 win over the Warriors.

James' overall box score entry was unprecedented, regardless of age.

By virtue of playing into his 40s, James has set several longevity records, such as becoming the all-time minutes leader (playoffs included) and notching the most 30-point games in history. There have also been less-flattering records, such as the most field-goal misses and most threes missed in the playoffs.

The latest feat may be his most impressive longevity record due to the level of difficulty involved in scoring 40.

Historically, Michael Jordan remains the only other 40-year-old to score 40-plus. Jordan was 40 years and four days old when he scored 43 points for the Wizards on Feb. 21, 2003. James was 40 years and 38 days old when he broke the record.

When asked to contextualize the achievement, James wasn't shy of reminding the world of his age.

"What do I think? That I'm old," James said, via ESPN's Dave McMenamin. "That's what I think. I need a glass of wine and some sleep, that's the first thing I think about.

"The biggest thing is we got the win, obviously," he added. "But throughout my journey, anytime I've been named or in the category or whatever the case, crossed paths with any of the greats, it's always humbling. Just to know where I come from. And I love the game so much. So it's pretty cool."

The Lakers (30-19) have won 10 of their last 12 games and are within striking distance of the Rockets (32-19) for the fourth seed in the Western Conference. The Purple and Gold will soon be bolstered by the additions of Luka Doncic and Mark Williams into the starting unit.
