On face value, a Super Bowl some thought would be a coronation of the Chiefs making history ended up being a party for the Eagles instead. Philadelphia dominated Kansas City 40-22 on Sunday night. But even though the Chiefs failed to achieve the first Super Bowl three-peat, we still witnessed plenty of history in Super Bowl LIX.
The Eagles' performance avenged their Super Bowl LVII loss to Andy Reid — their all-time winningest coach — and his Chiefs. It also made Philadelphia the 16th NFL franchise to be home to two Lombardi Trophies.
With the win, the Eagles are now 2-3 all-time in Super Bowls, adding this latest title to a 41-33 Super Bowl LII win as they derailed another dynasty in New England.
Nick Sirianni is 1-1 himself on the biggest stage, and will now forever be classified as a Super Bowl-winning head coach. Just reaching the game made Sirianni the first coach in Eagles history to ever lead Philadelphia to multiple Super Bowls.
Much like his head coach, Jalen Hurts also earned a special distinction upon the first snap of the game. Hurts became the first quarterback to start two Super Bowls for Philadelphia.
Most importantly, he played lights out and earned Super Bowl MVP in the process. Hurts completed 17-of-22 passes for 221 yards and scored three total touchdowns. He even ran for 72 yards.
In an ironic twist, Saquon Barkley didn't have to be great for his team to win. The NFL's Offensive Player of the Year only amassed 57 yards on the ground for a pedestrian average of 2.3 yards per touch. Despite being hampered by the Chiefs stacking the box, Barkley did accomplish some individual history of his own.
Needing only 30 yards to surpass Terrell Davis' 1998 total of 2,476, Barkley did break an NFL single-season rushing record after all. Barkley has the most overall rushing yards in a single regular season and playoffs combined. This comes after he sat out Week 18, settling for a 2,000-yard season and not attempting to break Eric Dickerson's regular season mark.
He keeps making history‼️

Not to be overlooked, the Eagles defense proved to be too much for Patrick Mahomes to handle. Philadelphia's strong defensive line won the battle of the trenches, sacking Mahomes six times — one shy of matching the record for the most sacks in a Super Bowl.
Philadelphia's defense also caused three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble.
The only thing the Eagles missed out on was the largest margin of victory in Super Bowl history — the 49ers' 55-10 Super Bowl XXIV win owns that honor, not that anyone in Philadelphia cares much about that now.
With such a young team and most of their core returning, the Eagles now turn their attention to trying to claim back-to-back Super Bowl titles, something that's only happened nine times to this point.
