Stacked entry list for Daytona 500 sets stage for action-packed week

As the NASCAR Cup Series prepares for its annual trip to the Sunshine State for its premier event, the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, there will be some added pressure for the drivers trying to make the field for Sunday's race.

The initial entry list for the "Great American Race" shows 45 cars, which is the most since 49 drivers attempted to make the race in 2015, per Dustin Long of NBC Sports.

While there are 36 chartered cars locked into the race, including past Daytona 500 winners Joey Logano (2015), Denny Hamlin (2016, 2019, 2020), Austin Dillon (2018), Michael McDowell (2021), Austin Cindric (2022), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (2023) and William Byron (2024), there are only four spots available for the nine open teams trying to make the race.

There are several notable drivers and teams that will have to either qualify or race their way in through the Duel qualifying races on Thursday night.

Those nine drivers include Corey LaJoie (No. 01 Rick Ware Racing Ford), 2024 Xfinity Series champion Justin Allgaier (No. 40 JR Motorsports Chevrolet in partnership with country music star Chris Stapleton and his Traveller Whiskey brand), J.J. Yeley (No. 44 NY Racing Chevrolet), 2017 Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. (No. 56 Tricon Garage Toyota), Anthony Alfredo (No. 62 Beard Motorsports Chevrolet), Chandler Smith (No. 66 MBM Motorsports' Garage 66 Ford), B.J. McLeod (No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet), seven-time Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jimmie Johnson (No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota) and four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves (No. 91 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet).

If Castroneves is unable to qualify for the race on single-car speed or through his Duel race, he would be able to take advantage of NASCAR's new "Open Exemption Provisional," and inherit the 41st-place starting position.

Cars take to the high banks on Wednesday morning for practice before single-car qualifying takes place under the lights Wednesday night (8 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Following the conclusion of qualifying, the two fastest drivers earn front row starting spots while the two fastest open drivers lock in on speed.

The other two spots will be determined in the pair of Duel qualifying races Thursday night (7 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). With so many drivers fighting for four spots, the intensity is sure to be off the charts just to get in the race.

While it is not usual to have this many entries for the Daytona 500 in its cherished history, it has been a decade since there were this many entries, which leaves the door open for some notable drivers to potentially miss the race altogether.

Given Castroneves can fall back on the provisional if he has to, and Allgaier, Truex Jr. and Johnson should have the pace to either lay down a fast enough lap in qualifying or race their way in through the Duels, there is a path toward all four of them making it in. However, nothing is guaranteed, especially with pack racing at Daytona.

Each year, it seems one Duel is calm while the other presents some drama. If that continues this season, all it takes is one of those drivers being in the wrong place at the wrong time to end their hopes of making it to Sunday.

Buckle-up for what is sure to be a thrilling Speedweek at Daytona as the 2024 NASCAR season shifts into full gear with Sunday's 67th running of the Daytona 500 (2:30 p.m. ET, Fox, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

ThorSport Racing teammates front and center of Truck Series playoff bubble

With one race remaining in the 2025 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season, there's a pair of ThorSport Racing teammates battling for the final Truck Series playoff spot. With Grant Enfinger, Ty Majeski and Kaden Honeycutt having locked up spots on points, third-year driver Jake Garcia holds the 10th and final provisional playoff berth over two-time series champion Ben Rhodes. Rhodes, who won the championship in 2021 and 2023, is in the midst of his worst season since his rookie campaign in 2016. After being eliminated in the Round of 10 a year ago, he's on pace to score single-digit top-10 finishes for the second year in a row. Garcia, meanwhile, is on pace for a career year. Should he hang on and make the playoffs, it'd be his first postseason appearance in his second year with ThorSport Racing. But it's not just Garcia and Rhodes battling for a spot on points. Gio Ruggiero sits 12th on the playoff grid, 21 points behind Garcia. An inspired effort from Ruggiero and the No. 17 team on Friday at Richmond could be enough to lift the rookie into the playoffs. Behind Ruggiero, every other full-time driver in the field must score a victory on Friday in order to make the postseason. That list begins with Tanner Gray in 13th, who has yet to make the playoffs in his sixth Truck Series season. Connor Mosack (14th) and Jack Wood (18th) are looking to join their McAnally-Hilgemann Racing teammates in Daniel Hemric and Tyler Ankrum in the postseason with a win, while three-time champion Matt Crafton (15th) could wipe away the playoff chances of his ThorSport teammates in Garcia and Rhodes with a win at Richmond. Should Crafton find victory lane, it'd be his first win since Kansas in July 2020. Andres Perez will be in a must-win situation with a completely new team. Spire Motorsports released Perez on Monday, forcing the rookie driver to sign with Niece Motorsports for the rest of the 2025 campaign. A win with his new team at Richmond is Perez's only path to the postseason. Toni Breidinger has had a rough rookie season in the Truck Series, but a win at Richmond would make her the second driver from the TRICON Garage stable to make the playoffs in 2025. Matt Mills, Dawson Sutton, Spencer Boyd and Frankie Muniz could also win their way into the 2025 Truck Series playoffs with a victory at Richmond on Friday. The eero 250 will go green shortly after 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday, with coverage on FS1, NRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Jets QB Justin Fields had 'alarming' practice against Giants

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields found out he has a long way to go following his performance at Tuesday's joint practice with the New York Giants. Per Connor Hughes of SNY TV, Fields started hot at the practice before struggling during the move-the-ball period. "Very interesting practice for #Jets QB Justin Fields," Hughes posted on X. "He finished 7 of 12 with a TD. 5 of 5 to start practice. Then 0 for 4. Finished 2 of 3 with the really impressive TD to Jeremy Ruckert in red zone (starter 18 yard line). "The offensive performance was a bit alarming in move-the-ball period of practice. Fields Co. had three attempts to get down field. They didn’t gain a first down. Only gained yards twice (two short Breece Hall runs). Three sacks. That needs to be fixed. #Giants defense toyed with NYJ during that period." Some Jets fans online thought Hughes was using hyperbole to characterize the practice, but he doubled down on his judgment of the offense. Fields looked strong on his first and only drive in the Jets' 30-10 win over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night. He went 3-of-4 passing for 42 yards and rushed two times for 14 yards and a touchdown. However, the Giants defense at the joint practice is a much better unit than the short-handed one the Packers trotted out for the first preseason game. Fields' issues seen with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers, with holding the ball too long and not being able to pass consistently downfield, were a factor against the Giants. Following Saturday's game, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Fields was getting better but had a lot to improve on. Tuesday's practice was a humbling reminder that Fields needs to become a consistent passer if the Jets are going to move the ball on good defenses in the regular season.

Oregon suspends former five-star WR recruit indefinitely

Oregon wide receiver Jurrion Dickey has struggled to live up to expectations in his first two seasons with the Ducks, and he is now in a terrible position heading into 2025 as well. Dickey has been suspended indefinitely by Oregon, head coach Dan Lanning announced on Tuesday. Lanning also suggested that Dickey may not play for the Ducks again. "We have two team rules; that’s respectful, be on time,” Lanning said, via James Crepea of The Oregonian. “There’s some pieces of that where I felt like he needed a break from us and we needed a break from that so we could focus on what’s in front of us right now. "Wishing him nothing but the best, as far as success and want to see him get back to where he can be a contributor somewhere; that might be here that might be somewhere else.” Dickey was a five-star recruit and rated as one of the top wide receivers in the country when he came out of Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, Calif., in 2023. He suffered an injury in his senior year in high school and redshirted as a freshman at Oregon. Dickey has two catches for 14 years during his time with the Ducks. Oregon went 13-1 in Lanning's third season with the program last season. The Ducks lost to eventual national champion Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger Makes Direct Statement About Mason Rudolph's Spot On QB Depth Chart

The Pittsburgh Steelers have quite an interesting quarterback room for the 2025 season. Of course, all the focus is truly on Aaron Rodgers and what he can bring to the team at this stage in his career. Behind him, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph serving as the primary backup. Skylar Thompson and Will Howard are competing for the third spot on the depth chart, but unfortunately for Howard, an injury has slowed his progress. Thompson took advantage of the opportunity, performing well in the first preseason game and possibly reclaiming the QB3 role. Before his injury, Howard had previously moved ahead of Thompson in the competition. Former teammate of Rudolph, Ben Roethlisberger, recently shared his honest thoughts about the veteran quarterback’s performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Roethlisberger, who spent years with Rudolph during his time in Pittsburgh, had a unique perspective on how his former understudy handled the game. While Roethlisberger acknowledged there were some areas where Rudolph could improve, he also praised his composure, decision-making, and ability to move the offense when needed. Roethlisberger discussed Rudolph’s performance on his Footbahlin podcast, noting that the veteran looked confident and in control despite limited opportunities. "You know I thought Mason [Rudolph] played really well," Roethlisberger said on his podcast. "I thought he did exactly what you would hope to see from your backup quarterback. He went out there I think, he solidified himself… as the two." He pointed out that Rudolph’s familiarity with the Steelers’ system allows him to step in without disrupting the flow of the offense. With Rodgers leading the way, Rudolph providing a steady backup presence, and the QB3 competition between Thompson and Howard continuing, the Steelers’ quarterback depth will be a storyline worth following as the 2025 season approaches. "Let’s see how he does this week and the next week," Roethlisberger said. "I thought he played really well. I thought he was efficient with the ball. He threw the ball down the field. As a team, you like seeing that because that gives you confidence going into the season that if something were to happen one game for Aaron… you have a guy that you feel confident who could go in there. Same thing when we had Charlie Batch, you had Bruce Gradkowski, you had Byron Leftwich, you had Dennis Dixon and Josh Dobbs. Any of those guys. You just feel confident he can go in and just get it done for you." Roethlisberger had high praise for Rudolph, and hearing him mention him alongside names like Charlie Batch shows he has faith in Rudolph’s ability to be a reliable backup in Pittsburgh. There is a strong argument that Rudolph is one of the most dependable backup quarterbacks in the NFL, which is a significant asset for the Steelers in the 2025 season. Steelers' Mason Rudolph Has Great Preseason Game Versus Jaguars Rudolph only attempted 10 passes on Saturday night against the Jaguars, but completed 90 percent of them. He threw for 84 yards and one touchdown. While preseason football can be difficult to evaluate, he performed well in roughly a quarter and some change of action. His efficiency and composure reinforced the notion that the Steelers have one of the league’s most steady and trustworthy backup quarterbacks heading into the regular season. Roethlisberger is confident Rudolph has now locked up his spot as QB2 for the 2025 season. Steelers fans are now super eager to get updates on when Howard will be back from his injury. Howard and Thompson will fight for the QB3 spot. What grade would you give Rudolph for his preseason outing against the Jaguars?
