The PGA Tour heads back to San Diego this week for the Genesis Invitational. Due to the wildfires in Los Angeles, the Tour moved the event from its typical site at Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines Golf Course. If you remember, we just saw Torrey Pines three weeks ago when Harris English won the Farmers Insurance Open.
Tiger Woods was by far the biggest story heading into the week, but he pulled out of the tournament due to his mother's death. With no Woods in the field, here are the three biggest storylines for the Genesis Invitational.
Scheffler has been No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking since May of 2023. That won't change no matter what happens this week, but a McIlroy win would give him a legitimate argument as the best player on the PGA Tour right now.
McIlroy has already won two of the last three tournaments he's played. A win at the Genesis Invitational would give him back-to-back victories to open up the 2025 season. Meanwhile, Scheffler recently returned from a hand injury and finished T9 and T25 in his first two starts, two poor results based on his lofty expectations. If McIlroy beats Scheffler again this week, it'll be clear who's playing the best golf on the PGA Tour.

After finishing T5 at The Sentry to kick off the season, Aberg rolled into Torrey Pines and fired a 9-under 63 in the first round to take an early, two-shot lead. All the 25-year-old needed to do was shoot even par the rest of the way to win the tournament, but he came down with the flu and shot 75-74-79 to plummet to a tie for 42nd. Aberg tried to battle through the illness at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am but withdrew after a first-round 77.
Now two weeks removed from Pebble Beach, Aberg should be back to full health as he heads back to Torrey Pines with revenge on his mind.

Spieth underwent wrist surgery in August and didn't return to the PGA Tour until the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this season. He shot 79-67 on the weekend to finish T69 in the 80-man field, proving he still had plenty of rust to knock off.
It didn't take him long, though, as Spieth finished T4 at the WM Phoenix Open the following week and ranked second in the field in strokes gained on approach. It marked his best approach week since the 2023 RBC Heritage, where he lost in a playoff to Matt Fitzpatrick.
Spieth didn't record a single top-20 finish in his last 14 starts of 2024, but his game is finally trending in the right direction.
