Former MVP is deserving of 11th All-Star selection

James Harden is having an incredible season. The 16-year NBA veteran has been the LA Clippers' star talent over the first two-thirds of the basketball calendar. Harden is averaging 21.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 8.6 assists per night.

It should come as no surprise that Harden has been named to his 11th All-Star team. He's kept Ty Lue's squad afloat during Kawhi Leonard's absence.

Harden has been a vital cog in the Clippers remaining in the playoff mix despite residing in a loaded Western Conference. Lue's team is currently the sixth seed, which would guarantee a playoff spot.

During a recent interview with The Athletic, Harden showcased his professionalism. The 2018 MVP cited his teammates' production, noting how All-Star selections are a reflection of the team as a whole.

“I mean, it’s not about me, it’s about the team,” Harden said. “All-Star nod is a reflection of this team and what we’ve accomplished and what people from the beginning of the season thought we were going to do.”

Harden is an underrated playmaker and defender. During his prime, he was known for his scoring ability, often highlighting the heliocentric nature of a featured bucket-getter. However, as his career progressed, he became a well-rounded contributor, arguably making him more important to a franchise's chance of success.

The Clippers underwent a transition period this summer, with Paul George opting to leave the franchise. Harden has been the constant that kept the team on the right track. He's earned his opportunity to be celebrated among the league's best players at the All-Star game.

With George no longer on the Clippers roster, Harden has stepped into a bigger role. He's thriving because of it. No wonder he's back in the conversation of being among the league's premier talents.

At 35-years-old, Harden should be applauded for his consistency and impact. If the Clippers enjoy any success this season, it will have his fingerprints all over it.
