North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis sounds exasperated amid a disappointing season for the Tar Heels.
On Monday night, the Clemson Tigers blew out the Tar Heels 85-65 at home. According to CBS Sports' Kyle Boone, it was North Carolina's sixth-largest ACC loss since the 2010-11 season.
In his postgame news conference, Davis blasted his team for not playing with "a sense of emergency."
"That's the type of mindset that you have to have in your preparation, practice and play every day," Davis said. "And it doesn't guarantee you that things will work out your way, but without it, you have no chance. And so from that standpoint, just sad."
After losing three of their last four games, the Tar Heels (14-11) are on the verge of missing the NCAA Tournament for the second time in four seasons under Davis.
In the latest NET rankings, North Carolina — which is 1-10 in Quad 1 games — is No. 51.
Missing the tournament is considered unacceptable at a prestigious program like North Carolina, which has won six national championships. Unsurprisingly, some may start pointing the finger at Davis.
"We are getting to a point where Hubert Davis' job situation is going to get under heavier and heavier scrutiny," CBS Sports' Matt Norlander said following the loss to Clemson. "For the second time in three years, Carolina is pacing to miss the NCAA Tournament after being a preseason top-10 team."
North Carolina only has seven regular-season games left before the ACC Tournament, scheduled March 11-15 in Charlotte. If the Tar Heels win their conference tournament, they clinch an automatic bid in March Madness.
Davis' squad better play with a sense of desperation during this stretch. If it doesn't, that will raise more questions about his job security.
