Jason Kidd pulled a surprising move after his Dallas Mavericks lost to the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.
The Mavericks fell to the Kings 129-128 in overtime to fall to 28-26 on the season. Dallas was playing shorthanded. They were missing Anthony Davis, PJ Washington, Dereck Lively II and Dwight Powell due to injuries. As if that weren’t enough, Mavs center Daniel Gafford left with an injury. DeMar DeRozan won the game for the Kings with a floater in overtime.
After his team’s defeat, Kidd did not speak with the media. That was the first time many reporters who cover the Mavericks could not recall Kidd conducting a postgame media session.

This is the first NBA game I’ve covered where a coach didn’t do postgame.
Though Kidd did not speak with the media, he will not necessarily be punished by the league. According to Marc Stein, there is not a set penalty for those who miss their media availability. Additionally, Kidd’s status as a first-time violator means he might not even be fined.
There has been a ton of drama surrounding the Mavericks ever since their stunning trade of Luka Doncic a week ago.
A penalty from the league office is not automatic after Mavericks coach Jason Kidd was not made available to speak to the media after Monday night's loss to Sacramento.

First-time violations of this manner are really greeted with fines.

Doncic had been out since Christmas due to a calf injury, but he returned on Monday night and made his debut with the Lakers. Doncic had 14 points on 5/14 shooting with the Lakers in the team’s 19-point win over the Jazz.
Mavericks fans remain furious with the team over the decision to trade Doncic. Kidd has so far acted like a company man in response to the trade.
“I’m the one who gets the groceries, and I’ve got to figure out how to use it, and so that’s what we’re doing…I don’t wanna be the one that’s buying the groceries, just give me the groceries and I’ll figure it out,” Kidd said on Saturday.
Jason Kidd doubled down on not knowing about the Luka Doncic trade until right before it went down, and was asked if he was fine with not knowing until the end:

“Ya, I’m an employee of the Mavs.”
When asked if he wants any say on how the roster is constructed:
