Report: John Mara selling minority stake in Giants with projected record valuation

It appears the New York Giants are looking for an influx of cash. According to a report by Sports Business Journal on Thursday, team co-owner John Mara is looking to find a buyer for a limited stake in the franchise.

Up to 10% of the century-old team is on the market, with experts believing Mara could rake in a record amount.

It's another example of clubs taking advantage of the NFL's newfound leniency on allowing private equity into the game of football.

Per the report, the Super Bowl LIX-champion Philadelphia Eagles sold an 8% stake in the team to two families back in December in deals valued at $8.1B and $8.3B respectively.

The reason for Mara soliciting investment in the team is unknown (h/t ESPN), but an injection of cash could be just what the franchise needs to reset from it's losing ways.

After posting records with six or less wins for seven of the last eight seasons, the Giants must revamp their roster with talent worthy of "The Big Apple's" market.

The NFL salary cap is set to rise to $275M for the 2025 season and New York will have over $47M to work with in space.

While the money Mara will get for selling a portion of the team won't entirely go into the roster, it'll certainly help nonetheless, especially if he's estimated to earn more than the combined $16.4B Philadelphia owner Jeffrey Lurie got in December.

Forbes valued the Giants at $7.3B in August while others have them slightly higher.

Regardless of valuations, Mara is looking to return to the NFL's mountain top where his rival Lurie currently sits for the second time in seven seasons.

Money can't win football games but perhaps in this case it might be New York's last hope to get back to it's winning ways.
