Paul George's contract is officially the worst in the NBA

Move aside, Bradley Beal. Paul George officially has the worst contract in the NBA, with the 76ers set to pay the regressing star over $50M for another three seasons through 2027-28.

When George signed with the 76ers as a free agent, the expectation was for the Palmdale native to replicate his production as a Clipper. During his five seasons in Los Angeles, he averaged 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists at 45/40/88 shooting splits, making him one of the most efficient two-way wings in the league. George made three All-Star teams with the Clippers, besides leading the franchise to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in its existence.

George has been an unmitigated disaster for the 76ers. In Wednesday's 100-96 loss to the Nets, he finished with two points, six rebounds and four assists while shooting 1-of-7. The stat line was all the more shocking as the Sixers were without Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, putting the onus on George to step up. He didn't. The game marked the seventh time this season George scored in single digits — an unprecedented stat for a player on a max-level contract.

Through five contests in February, George is averaging 10.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists at 39.6 percent shooting. The Sixers lost all five games.

After Wednesday's horrific showing, George blamed his lingering injuries for his slump and said he was looking forward to the All-Star break.

"The last couple of weeks have been tough on my body," George told reporters, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. "So, this time off [All-Star break] should definitely help. Tonight, I had no burst. It was bothering me but I tried to be available. But, this break is definitely needed."

As George continues to struggle, the Clippers look like geniuses for not offering him a max-level contract this past summer. According to George, the Clippers' offer to him was "kind of disrespectful" and forced him to look at other avenues in free agency.

The 76ers are likely stuck with George for the foreseeable future due to his age, injury history and regressing production. George turns 35 in May and will be 38 when the final year of his contract kicks in. To make matters worse, the 76ers have another albatross of a contract in their books in the form of the injury-prone Joel Embiid, who could opt for another surgery this summer.
