The New York Giants are almost certain to take a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, but which one? Most experts believe it will be Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, while some believe they’ll take Miami’s Cam Ward. Count ESPN’s Field Yates among the latter.
In his latest mock draft, Yates has New York taking Ward third-overall, allowing the Las Vegas Raiders to select Sanders with the No. 6 pick. Others like Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports also have the Giants drafting Ward but after the Raiders trade multiple picks to the Titans to get Sanders first overall.
Sanders may be the more polished passer but many scouts feel Ward has more upside. Ward started his college career at the University of the Incarnate Word, a Division I program where he set career records in passing yards (6,908) and touchdowns (71) for the school and single-game records of 610 yards and seven scores.
Ward threw for 6,968 yards and 48 touchdowns with Washington State from 2022-23 and set single-season records for touchdowns (39), yards (4,313) and completion percentage (67.2) with Miami last year. Only Syracuse’s Kyle McCord threw for more yards (4,779) in 2024.

Yates describes Ward as “electric” while acknowledging he’ll still have to clean up his footwork and decision-making. He thinks the 6-foot-2, 223-pound quarterback “brings a powerful arm, can be an innovator on the field and has a steely demeanor in big moments.” Trapasso is less effusive, calling Ward a “fine get” but acknowledges the team has to take a quarterback in the draft.
Of course, the team could always add a veteran quarterback instead. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants are about to hire former Jaguars and Bills WR coach Chad Hall as their assistant quarterbacks coach. Hall is the brother-in-law of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who is reportedly looking for a new contract in 2025.
It’s hard to imagine a flawed team like the Giants passing on a prospect like Ward for a 37-year-old quarterback, but general manager Joe Schoen isn’t just the man who cut quarterback Daniel Jones less than two years into a four-year, $160M contract, he’s also responsible for letting Super Bowl champion Saquon Barkley, the NFL’s leading rusher, sign with rival Philadelphia.
At this point, New York can only hope that Yates and Trapasso got this one right.
