Canada’s Brandon Hagel on fight with USA’s Matthew Tkachuk: ‘I did it for the flag, not the cameras’
Canada USA 4 Nations Face-Off Fight Eric Bolte-Imagn Images

Will the sequel live up to the hype?

The United States beat Canada by a score of 3-1 on Saturday in Montreal after boos rained down during the Star Spangled Banner and three fights broke out in the first nine seconds of play.

The two teams will meet again in the championship game of the 4 Nations Face-Off on Thursday. This time, the United States will be the home team playing in front of fans at TD Gardens in Boston.

Following Saturday’s win over Canada, American forward Matthew Tkachuk said that brother Brady Tkachuk and teammate J.T. Miller formed a group chat to plan how to “send a message” to Canada.

The elder Tkachuk dropped the gloves with Brandon Hagel right off the opening face-off, and then Brady scrapped with Sam Bennett immediately after the next draw. After a face-off in Canada’s zone a few seconds later, Miller got into a fight with Colton Parayko, capping off the wildest intro to an international hockey game in recent memory.

So, what might Thursday’s rematch have in store? We don’t know what the United States is plotting in any of their group chats, but Hagel thinks “things will be the same way” when the two teams play again.

Hagel also said that Canada has no group chats or anything to plan what they’re going to do when facing the Americans. The Tampa Bay Lightning winger added that he’s playing for the Canadian flag and not to make good television.

“I think we’re out there playing for the flag, not the cameras,” Hagel said. “We don’t need to initiate anything. We don’t have any group chats going on. We’re going out there playing our game and then giving it everything and doing it for our country. We don’t need to initiate everything. We’re just going to play as hard as we can and do it for the flag on the chest.”

Seeing three scraps in an international game is unusual because IIHF rules are strict against players dropping the gloves. But since the 4 Nations Face-Off is an NHL event, the same rules don’t apply as they would for tournaments like the Olympics or World Juniors.

This has resulted in a very interesting tournament, with head-to-heads that have much more energy than the usual pond hockey played at the annual All-Star Game. Hagel noted that he came into the 4 Nations Face-Off with the mindset that this was going to be anything but another shinny game.

“I was thinking to myself laying in bed the night before the (first) game, ‘If this is going to be like an All-Star type of thing then I’m going to be so out of place because I’m putting my head through a wall tomorrow.’ That was my mentality.”

The United States could be without two key forwards on Thursday. Matthew Tkachuk didn’t play in the team’s loss to Sweden on Monday, and Brady Tkachuk left the game in the first period after slamming into the opposing net. Captain Auston Matthews also didn’t play on Monday, but it’s expected he’ll be available on Thursday.

Reports: Arbitrator sides with Flyers in Ryan Johansen case

The Philadelphia Flyers were within their rights to terminate Ryan Johansen's contract last summer and they don't have to pay the rest of the forward's contract, an arbitrator ruled on Tuesday, according to multiple media reports. The reported decision ends a dispute that started shortly after Philadelphia acquired Johansen in a March 6, 2024, trade with Colorado. The Flyers also received a 2025 first-round draft pick in the deal, while the Avalanche got defenseman Sean Walker and a 2026 fifth-round draft pick. The Flyers immediately placed Johansen on waivers, and he never played a game for Philadelphia. When the Flyers assigned him to their AHL affiliate, he refused to report, maintaining he had a hip injury. The team then released him, citing a "material breach" of contract. The NHL Players' Association filed a grievance on Johansen's behalf. The Flyers reportedly convinced the arbitrator that Johansen wasn't hurt, pointing out that he played in all 63 of the Avalanche's games prior to the trade, including a contest against the Edmonton Oilers two days before the swap. The arbitrator's reported verdict gets both the Flyers and the Avalanche off the hook for the remaining $8 million Johansen was owed for the rest of the 2023-24 season and the full 2024-25 season. Johansen, 33, sat out all of last season. In 2023-24, his lone season with Colorado, he logged 13 goals and 10 assists. Johansen previously played for the Columbus Blue Jackets (2011-12 to 2015-16) and the Nashville Predators (2015-16 to 2022-23). In 905 NHL games over 13 seasons, he has 202 goals and 376 assists with a minus-11 rating and 546 penalty minutes.

Kings Predicted to Send Malik Monk to Lakers for $66 Million Duo in Offseason Trade

As the 2025-26 NBA season nears, one team that continues to be the subject of trade rumors is the Sacramento Kings. Of course, the Kings elected to keep their core of Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVien together this offseason despite many around the league expecting them to begin a rebuild. Sacramento also made some notable additions to their roster this summer as they selected Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud in the 2025 draft and added Dennis Schroder in free agency. While the Kings have upgraded their roster this offseason, some of their players continue to be in trade rumors, primarily for Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga who Sacramento is reportedly targeting. For the Kings, multiple players have come up in trad rumors this summer but none more than Malik Monk who is coming off the best season of his NBA career. Despite this, the Kings have elected to keep Monk thus far but that could change as they continue to look for ways to upgrade their roster even more this offseason to chase a playoff spot next season. Kings predicted to trade Malik Monk to Lakers With this in mind, SB Nations’ Jacob Rude recently released a mock trade that would send Malik Monk to the Los Angeles Lakers for two players. In the trade, the Kings would land Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber and a lottery protected 2031 first-round pick from the Lakers in return for Monk. This trade does not make a ton of sense for the Kings as they would swap one of the best scorers on their roster for two veterans who struggled last season and a lottery protected first-round pick. Both Vincent and Kleber would be solid additions to the Kings’ roster as they would fill two glaring holes in their rotation, but Sacramento would likely want more in return for Monk, especially with him coming off the best season of his career. Because of this, it is highly unlikely that the Kings would agree to this trade as they could possibly receive a larger return for their veteran guard from another team this offseason.

Bryson DeChambeau divulges Scottie Scheffler's biggest advantage

We all know Scottie Scheffler is the best golfer on the planet by a fairly large margin, but what makes him so much more consistent than other stars in professional golf? Bryson DeChambeau, one of Scheffler's biggest rivals in major championships, thinks he knows the answer. In Tuesday's appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," DeChambeau detailed how Scheffler dominates the PGA Tour weekly. "He's got the best spin and distance control I've ever seen," DeChambeau said. "He controls the golf ball from a spin perspective so much better than everybody else. Like, if you're 175 yards out, and it's 10 miles [an hour] into the wind, he knows how to control the flight and spin to get that ball to land right next to the hole every time. Probably since Tiger [Woods], he's the best that we've seen." The stats confirm DeChambeau's breakdown. Scheffler has ranked first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained on approach in three straight seasons. He also ranks first in proximity to the hole and greens in regulation percentage over the last four years. Iron play is Scheffler's superpower, but it wasn't always that way. "I played with him in college a bunch, and I've said it before, but he's definitely improved since college for sure," DeChambeau said with a chuckle. "It's impressive to see what he's done, and we're all aspiring to do that. That's something I've gotta get better at. I can hit it farther than him. I can hit it probably straighter than him. I can make just as many putts as him, but, really, it's about my iron play right now and wedges to get a little more consistent." Iron play is the biggest indicator of success in professional golf. If you're giving yourself more birdie chances from close range than anyone in the field, you're going to have the best chance to win by Sunday afternoon. No one is better at hitting specific distances more consistently than Scheffler. Just look at how accurate he is. DeChambeau has the best chance to catch Scheffler as the best player in the world because he's elite off the tee and on the greens, but that won't happen unless he makes a major improvement to his iron game.

Milwaukee Brewers Andrew Vaughn receives wild MVP endorsement

There’s no question the Milwaukee Brewers have gotten more than they expected from Andrew Vaughn, a player they acquired largely due to Aaron Civale’s trade request and Vaughn’s slow start with the Chicago White Sox. What looked like a change-of-scenery move has turned into a major win for Milwaukee. Since Vaughn debuted for the Brew Crew on July 7, replacing the injured Rhys Hoskins, Milwaukee has gone 24-4 and Vaughn has posted video game-like numbers. Over that stretch, he has the sixth highest batting average in MLB at .347, sixth best OPS at 1.055, and the second most RBI’s with 32. His incredible play has one MVP voter giving him an endorsement to be in top 10 consideration for the award at the end of the season. Milwaukee Brewers Andrew Vaughn receives wild MVP endorsement Baseball Columnist Bob Nightengale recently posted on X that Vaughn had inserted himself in the top 10 MVP discussions. As incredible as Vaughn has been over the past five weeks, it’s hard to justify that he is truly in consideration for MVP. His season numbers include a .243/.288/.421 slash line with 13 home runs and 51 RBI. While Vaughn has undeniably been a key contributor for the Brewers and exceeded expectations since arriving in Milwaukee, labeling him an MVP candidate is a stretch. He’s become a valuable everyday presence, but his performance doesn’t stack up with the league’s true MVP frontrunners.
