It remains somewhat unclear whether or not the Pittsburgh Steelers actually "made inquiries to the" Jacksonville Jaguars "about a trade for" quarterback Trevor Lawrence at some point this offseason.
However, it sounds like recently hired Jaguars executive vice president of football operations Tony Boselli would like for Lawrence to work with new head coach Liam Coen for years to come.
"You’ve got to get the head coach right," Boselli said during a recent appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, as shared by Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "You’ve got to get the quarterback right. We believe that we have a franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. I’ll pound the table for that one. This is going to be his third head coach, and all the different systems and everything else. You can’t do that. You got to help a quarterback have consistency and build with him, and build it around him."
In his final season with the second head coach of his career (Doug Pederson), Lawrence was often part of the problem for an offense that struggled during games up until he was sidelined in December with a shoulder injury and a concussion. According to Pro Football Reference, Lawrence finished the 2024 regular season ranked 39th among qualified players with a 60.6% completion percentage and 29th with an 85.2 passer rating.
With all that said, the Jaguars didn't sign Lawrence to a five-year contract extension worth up to $275M with $142M fully guaranteed last offseason to give up on him this winter. Besides, his deal includes a no-trade clause, and he doesn't want to go anywhere as he prepares to begin working with Coen.
"We talked about Trevor, obviously, and the quarterback, but his main focus is the offensive line," Boselli added about conversations he's had with Coen. "Line of scrimmage. He says, 'Listen, we have to get the O-line right. If you can’t control the line of scrimmage, if you can’t run it, and you can’t protect, you can’t win.'"
Lawrence certainly will have plenty to prove to a regime that didn't make him the first overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but it sounds like trade rumors regarding his services can be put to bed for the foreseeable future.
