Insider addresses if Browns could change Myles Garrett stance during combine

While the Cleveland Browns seemingly have made it known they don't plan to trade wantaway pass-rusher Myles Garrett anytime soon, some within the football community have suggested the Browns could discuss Garrett's availability with other teams during the upcoming scouting combine.

For a piece published Sunday, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer indicated those running the club won't change their minds regarding Garrett's status through the first weekend of March.

"The Browns head to the NFL combine next week with the same mindset they had earlier this month at the Senior Bowl when Browns GM Andrew Berry said he wouldn’t trade Garrett, not even for two first-round picks," Cabot wrote. "He truly has no intentions of trading him, and probably won’t engage in substantive trade talks in Indianapolis, where plenty of NFL business is conducted while the college prospects get evaluated by all 32 teams."

During a Super Bowl week media tour, Garrett told just about anybody who would listen that he wants to join a supposed contender such as the Washington Commanders or Detroit Lions. However, he is under contract through the 2026 season for a team that thinks it could be a solid starting quarterback away from returning to the playoffs even though it finished this past season at 3-14.

Cleveland reportedly is willing to sign Garrett to a new deal that would make him the NFL's highest-paid defensive player, but Cabot suggested the 29-year-old won't put pen to paper on such an agreement anytime soon. Meanwhile, multiple analysts have said the Browns likely won't trade Garrett before June 1 because of salary-cap issues.

"It really does seem as though Garrett wants out regardless of what the Browns do to bolster the team this offseason," Cabot added. "He and the Browns aren’t even on the same page in regards to their commitment to winning this season. Most Browns players believe the club is a good quarterback and a few other key pieces away from contending, but Garrett emerged from his exit meetings not buying into that notion."

Cabot is among those who think the Los Angeles Rams "will probably end up re-signing" Matthew Stafford even though Los Angeles recently gave Stafford’s agent permission to speak with other teams about the veteran signal-caller's value.

Multiple reporters assume Cleveland will look to sign Kirk Cousins of the Atlanta Falcons to a team-friendly deal as soon as he becomes available next month, as Cousins previously had Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator when the two were employed by the Minnesota Vikings.

Garrett presumably doesn't view Cousins as a championship-caliber quarterback. Nevertheless, it appears the All-Pro won't get any closer to possibly receiving his desired trade before the combine wraps up.
