Red Wings deal goaltender Ville Husso to Ducks

The Detroit Red Wings on Monday traded goaltender Ville Husso to the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations. 

The 30-year-old Husso, who had been with the Red Wings for the past two seasons, struggled to secure a consistent role with the team, leading to his departure. The trade helps clear cap space and opens up opportunities for Detroit to adjust its roster moving forward.

Husso made nine appearances for Detroit during the 2024-25 season, starting in eight of those games. He posted a 1-5-2 record with a 3.69 goals-against average and an .866 save percentage. His limited time in the crease highlighted his struggles to establish himself as a reliable goaltender in the Red Wings’ rotation. 

In addition to his NHL appearances, Husso also played 13 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League, where he posted an 8-4-0 record, a 2.70 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage, showing more stability but still facing inconsistency. 

While there was some uncertainty in net earlier in the season for the Red Wings, things have started to settle with Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon emerging as the go-to duo.

For Husso, that development meant he could no longer maintain a significant role in Detroit. With the organization focusing on the growth of young Sebastian Cossa, Husso's presence in the minors with his contract weighing on the cap became problematic. 

This trade, while low-profile, provides him with a new opportunity in Anaheim where he could see more action. With the Ducks, Husso may get a chance to regain his footing as a regular NHL starter, assuming he gets the playing time. 

For the Red Wings, the deal frees up salary-cap space and clears a path for future goaltending decisions.
