March Madness can’t come soon enough for high-flying St. John’s

The St. John’s Red Storm have emerged as one of the most compelling stories of the 2024-25 NCAA basketball season.

Under the stewardship of legendary coach Rick Pitino, the team boasts a 24-4 overall record, including an impressive 15-2 mark in Big East play, putting it firmly at the top of the conference standings.

As the regular season nears its conclusion, St. John’s is ranked No. 7 in the nation, marking its highest position in over 30 years. For a program that has often lingered in the shadows of college basketball, this rise has generated palpable excitement among fans, alumni and analysts. With a rich history of success but recent struggles, the current team’s performance represents a major leap forward for the program.

Defensively, the Red Storm have been nothing short of dominant. They are allowing just 65.7 points per game and limiting opponents to a mere 39.6 percent shooting from the field, showcasing an aggressive and disciplined defensive game plan that is one of the best in the nation. This defensive intensity has become a hallmark of the team’s identity, complementing its high-powered offense.

A key factor in its success has been the return of guard Deivon Smith, whose playmaking and perimeter shooting have provided an offensive spark. Smith’s 40-plus percent shooting rate from three-point range for the second straight season has been instrumental in stretching defenses. The 22-year-old transfer from Utah has brought the Red Storm a dynamic scoring threat, further enhancing their offensive versatility.

St. John’s recent 89-75 triumph over Connecticut was a statement win, showcasing its depth and resilience. With March Madness on the horizon, the Red Storm are positioning themselves as a serious NCAA Tournament contender. Their blend of defensive intensity, rebounding prowess and multifaceted offense makes them a team no one will want to face in the postseason.

After limited legitimate NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 25 years, including recent rocky tenures under Chris Mullin and Mike Anderson, the Red Storm are finally back on track under Pitino’s leadership. This rise has not only revived the program but has also reignited hope among fans who are eager to see St. John’s return to national prominence for the first time in decades.
