It was reported that "multiple league insiders are convinced the" New York Giants "have their sights on" Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Less than 24 hours after that, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News suggested that Giants general manager Joe Schoen could try to trade for Los Angeles Rams starter Matthew Stafford and then spend the third pick of the 2025 NFL Draft on Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter rather than on Sanders.
In his latest mock draft meant "to represent what the league thinks and what is likely to happen," ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. predicted that the Giants would take Hunter over Sanders if given the choice.
"There are mixed feelings on [Sanders] around the league, and he isn't seen as a surefire top-five pick," Kiper explained. "...Hunter is my top-ranked prospect in the class, and though I currently see him as a receiver in the pros, he could also play cornerback for New York. He can make a massive impact on either side of the ball, and he'll likely see at least some time on both sides. Perhaps the Giants take his ball skills and quickness and drop him at receiver opposite Malik Nabers to form a solid supporting cast around whomever is under center. Perhaps they look at his elite instincts and finally land a true CB1. Either way, this pick would be clutch for a struggling Giants team."
Kiper mentioned that either Stafford or Sam Darnold of the Minnesota Vikings could be realistic quarterback options for the Giants this offseason. Some within the league are allegedly "skeptical that Stafford would leave the Rams" before the 2025 draft gets underway, and the Vikings still have until the March 4 deadline to decide on whether or not they'll retain Darnold's rights for next season via the franchise tag. Additionally, it's unknown if Darnold would welcome a return to the New York market after he flopped with the New York Jets during a tenure that ran from the 2018 draft through the 2020 season.
Some stories have linked the Giants with current Pittsburgh Steelers backup Justin Fields. Fields is on track to become a free agent when the new league year opens on March 12, and it's unclear if he has a future with a Steelers team that could re-sign starter Russell Wilson.
Interestingly, college football writers from The Athletic predicted in a mock draft released on Tuesday that the Giants would grab Hunter over Sanders at No. 3. For whatever reasons, it seems some are convinced Schoen and Co. aren't as high on Sanders as previously thought.
