The Anaheim Ducks acquired veteran goaltender Ville Husso from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for future considerations on Monday.
Adding a seasoned goaltender became necessary because Anaheim starter John Gibson was sidelined after suffering an injury in Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Bruins.
The Ducks will initially assign Husso, 30, to their AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls. Husso drew interest as an attractive rental option on the trade market because of his $4.75 million cap hit.
Even though it's been another disappointing season for Anaheim, as it is on pace to miss the playoffs for its seventh straight season, James Reimer, 36, hasn't shown enough consistency at the NHL level to trust his support as a backup to Lukas Dostal.
Following the trade, the Ducks social media team made a satirical remark on X about the assets they were parting ways with to acquire the goaltender.
"Thank you to future considerations and best of luck in Detroit," the post said.

Future considerations are an ambiguous asset that is to be determined at a later time. It is the minimum value to satisfy the NHL's trade requirements. In most cases, it just means the two trade parties will exchange conditional draft picks or offer another asset that carries negligible value.
Husso had been sent to Detroit's AHL affiliate earlier this season as the team pivoted to veterans Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon.
The Finnish netminder has struggled throughout his five seasons seeing action in the NHL. He's posted one season with a save percentage north of .900 and owns a career goals-against average of 3.05.
