Amid early struggles, do Yankees have a Jasson Dominguez problem?

If the Yankees thought their outfield defense would improve post-Juan Soto, they might want to pause for just a moment.

Let's roll the tape on young outfielder Jasson Dominguez, who has struggled out in left field early in spring training.

Dominguez, known as "The Martian," has had his fair share of adventures thus far after similar struggles in left field upon his return to the Bronx late last season. The 22-year-old is a natural center fielder, and it shows.

The Yankees, of course, acquired outfielder Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs to man center field this season, moving captain Aaron Judge back to right field where he belongs after playing center field last year with the aforementioned Soto in the fold. That means Dominguez can only play left field anyway, health permitting among the group.

There's no denying Dominguez's talent as a whole. He's easily New York's top prospect in 2025 with an above-average hit tool and power at the plate. He also gets high marks for his running and throwing arm. But his one below-average category? Fielding.

Still, there's belief within the organization that "The Martian" can figure it out in left field. Teammate and left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodon says to preach patience with Dominguez.

“He’s a tremendous athlete,” Carlos Rodón said, per the New York Post. “I think he has all the tools to become an elite defender. Now, I think that’s something that could take time.”

And while it's true that the 22-year-old is athletic enough to handle the position, the Yankees don't have much room for error this spring, especially given the options behind Dominguez in left field are less than inspiring.

That means it's time for him to fix his defense in short order. If he does, "The Martian" could be the total package for the Bronx Bombers in 2025.
