Steelers' remaining QB options with Matthew Stafford off the board

The rest of the quarterback market can fall into place now that Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams have reached a new agreement.

According to Benjamin Albright of KOA Colorado, the Pittsburgh Steelers were one of the teams that called about Stafford. So, with trading for the veteran QB now off the board, who is the Steelers' options under center?

Justin Fields

Perhaps the only option with the present and future in mind, Pittsburgh could bring back Justin Fields. Even though he didn't end the season as the Steelers' starting quarterback, he played relatively well, completing 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards with five touchdowns and only one pick in six starts, leading the team to a 4-2 record.

Fields, who will turn 26 on March 5, could have untapped potential as a former first-round pick. Signing Fields to another deal would provide the Steelers with some clarity beyond 2025.

Fields could prove he can be a franchise quarterback and make Pittsburgh want to keep him around long-term. Of course, he could also demonstrate why the Bears gave up on him and force Pittsburgh to do the same next offseason.

Russell Wilson

If not Fields, the Steelers might be interested in running it back with Russell Wilson.

While Wilson did not lead Pittsburgh any further than his recent predecessors, he did show more flashes of his former Pro Bowl self in 2024 than during his time with the Denver Broncos.

The Steelers went 6-5 with Wilson as their starter, as he threw for 2,482 yards and scored 18 total touchdowns with just five interceptions.

Unlike Fields, Wilson is nearing the end of his career and will not dramatically improve in his late 30s. The odds that Pittsburgh would be much better as an offense or team with Wilson are slim, and he would likely command more money than Fields simply due to his career resume.

The Steelers' offense failed to reach 20 points across Wilson's final five games between the regular season and playoffs combined.

Aaron Rodgers

With Stafford staying in Los Angeles, Aaron Rodgers is the only quarterback who has already been assured a spot in the Hall of Fame.

On one hand, Rodgers showed signs of improvement towards the end of last season and will be a full year removed from surgery. His overall numbers of 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions were not as bad as some of the narratives surrounding him suggest.

However, Rodgers will be 42 when the 2025 season begins, and he tends to create headlines that could become distracting for a team trying to win.

Sam Darnold also deserves to be mentioned. Granted, he's coming off his best season and is still in his prime, so he would require a significant financial investment.

What the Steelers decide to do will say a lot about their mentality moving forward.
