The Columbus Blue Jackets not only had a chance to host their first outdoor game on Saturday in the 2025 Stadium Series, it was also a massive game against the Detroit Red Wings with major playoff implications. The Blue Jackets ended up winning, 5-3, to take over the top wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference from the Red Wings.
They won it thanks to a controversial goal late in the third period.
Shortly after the Red Wings rallied to tie the game in the third period, Columbus' Justin Danforth split his way through two Red Wings defenders, picked up a loose puck and scored the eventual game-winning goal. It was a tremendous individual effort.
Here is a look at the play as well as the goal.

There was just one problem from a Red Wings perspective.
As Danforth split through the defenders, he appeared to catch Simon Edvinsson with a high-stick that went uncalled.
The Red Wings were furious with the lack of a call.
Given how late in the game it was, this was one of those classic NHL situations where the on-ice officials tend to put the whistles away and "let them play." The mindset is that unless something is egregious, they simply do not want to get involved and decide the game. The problem with that is by not getting involved and making close calls, that can also have a way of deciding the game. If a penalty gets called there Columbus never scores the go-ahead goal and Detroit's outstanding power play gets a chance to win the game itself.
In this case it was not meant to be, and the Blue Jackets complete a significant sweep of back-to-back games against the Red Wings. Columbus has been one of the best and most surprising stories in the NHL this season and looks to be on a path to the playoffs despite opening the season with almost zero expectations.
