Connor Zilisch crashes out, finishes 37th in NASCAR Cup Series debut

One of the most promising debuts in recent NASCAR history came to an early end on Sunday.

18-year-old Connor Zilisch came into Sunday's EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas as of the most exciting prospects in NASCAR history. Zilisch boasts wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and won Saturday's Xfinity Series race at COTA.

Zilisch suffered a flat tire on Lap 1, but was able to work his way back inside the top 15 at the beginning of Stage 3. Unfortunately, he barely made it past halfway in his Cup Series debut before things went south.

Daniel Suarez — Zilisch's Trackhouse Racing teammate for the weekend — spun on Lap 50, collecting Zilisch as the rookie driver attempted to avoid Suarez's spinning Chevrolet.

Zilisch was sent into the tire barriers before the entrance of Turn 20. He was checked and released from the infield care center following the wreck.

"We had a really fast Red Bull Chevrolet," Zilisch told Fox Sports after being released from the infield care center. "I've had so much fun preparing for this event. That second stage, driving from outside the top 30 to 14th was a lot of fun, passing a lot of guys that I used to watch on TV. Hopefully I'll get a chance to come do this again. I had an absolute blast driving through the field, and (I) wish it didn't end early."

Zilisch will certainly have plenty of Cup Series opportunities afforded to him in the future, and if Sunday's race was any indication, he'll have the opportunity to build quite the Cup Series career.

Zilisch was the first car ruled out of Sunday's race, and will be credited with a last-place (37th) finish in his Cup Series debut.
