John Cena's heel turn was a generational moment

For over two decades, John Cena has been a babyface in the WWE. He was the face of the "Ruthless Aggression" era. He has led the company through multiple iterations of itself. And now, all these years later, he's widely seen as the greatest wrestler in WWE history.

Cena is in his last year with the company. He's on a retirement tour and wants to go out with a bang. On Saturday, Cena won the 2025 Elimination Chamber. He will now face Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania.

However, the veteran wrestler opted not to wait for his moment in the spotlight. Instead, upon the instructions of The Rock, he attacked Rhodes in front of millions of shocked fans around the world.

The one wrestler you never thought would turn heel has taken a step into the dark side. He's a corporate man now. He works for The Rock and appears willing to do his bidding. In return, Cena will be expecting to overcome Rhodes at WrestleMania and break Ric Flair's record for the most world championships.

WWE is exceptionally good at throwing out curveballs. However, it's the one you never expect that has the most impact. Cena's heel turn is a generational moment. It's something younger fans will remember deep into their adult lives. And for millennial fans, it's something that could rekindle their love for the sport for another 20 to 30 years.

Cena isn't just a legend; he's a memory. Everybody has that one "Cena match" that made them fall for his character. And everybody will now remember where they were when he threw away his babyface persona in pursuit of immortality.

The road to WrestleMania is officially underway, and suddenly, the entire world is waiting to see what happens. For a company that was starting to lose some of the "heat" it had ridden over the last two years, this was a masterstroke. Now, all anybody can do is patiently wait to see how things play out.
