Manchester City’s turbulent season has been well-documented. With Liverpool closing in on the Premier League title, early exits from the Champions League and Carabao Cup have left the FA Cup as the club’s final opportunity to secure silverware. Its 3-1 victory against Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle in the fifth round over the weekend kept that hope alive, though not without difficulty.
Plymouth stunned the Premier League giants with an early goal from Maksym Talovierov, forcing City to respond. The standout performer was 19-year-old Nico O'Reilly, who, despite being deployed out of position at left-back, scored twice with powerful headers.

Kevin De Bruyne’s late strike sealed the win, but City's wastefulness in front of goal was glaring with Guardiola's side registering 20 shots off target, a shortcoming the manager partly attributed to the quality of the FA Cup ball.
The 54-year-old's frustration with his squad’s inconsistencies has been evident throughout the campaign. Defensive injuries have stretched the squad, while uncharacteristic slip-ups have left City fourth in the league table, trailing Liverpool, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. For much of the season, the prospect of retaining their Premier League crown has appeared increasingly unlikely.
That leaves the FA Cup as City's most realistic shot at a trophy. Guardiola, who has won the competition twice during his tenure—most recently in 2023—understands its significance not only for the club’s silverware collection but also for morale. A deep cup run could restore confidence and offer a positive conclusion to an otherwise disappointing campaign.
City’s chances of lifting the trophy remain strong, with several major competitors already eliminated. Premier League sides Brighton, Aston Villa, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth are still in the running, alongside the winner of Nottingham Forest versus Ipswich, and Championship side Preston.
Next up is an away match at Bournemouth on March 29. However, The Cherries pose a significant threat, with striker Justin Kluivert having netted 13 goals across all competitions. Bournemouth, currently seventh in the league, are on the verge of a historic European qualification spot. City’s defensive frailties were exposed on their last visit to the Vitality Stadium, suffering a 2-1 league defeat in November 2024.
For a club synonymous with success, finishing the season without silverware would be considered a failure. The FA Cup represents City’s final path to redemption.
