Why veteran cornerback Darius Slay could be fit for a Detroit homecoming

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to release cornerback Darius Slay, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Slay, who has been with the Eagles since 2020, played a key role in their Super Bowl LVII appearance and was a major contributor to the defense throughout his time in Philadelphia. In an interview on the "St. Brown Podcast," Slay expressed his openness to returning to Detroit.

"For sure, the two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit," Slay said. "The main two, the main ones I'd love to be at. If it is, it is. If it ain't, it ain't."

Slay posted 49 total tackles, including 36 solo tackles, in 2024. His productivity mirrors that of the Lions’ current veteran cornerback, Carlton Davis III, who recorded 56 total tackles and 40 solo tackles.

There have been multiple reports Davis has been heavily pursued by the Jacksonville Jaguars. If the Jaguars are successful in their pursuit, Slay could step in and provide similar on-field production, while also offering invaluable leadership and mentorship for Detroit’s young secondary.

Slay’s return to Detroit would be about more than just what he can do on the field; it’s about what he brings to the locker room. While the Lions’ young cornerbacks like Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. have shown potential, they still need guidance from an experienced player who’s seen it all. Slay’s leadership could elevate the entire unit, especially in high-pressure situations where experience is key.

If the Lions and Slay can come to an agreement, his return to Detroit would be a critical move in reinforcing the defensive leadership necessary for sustained success. With the team navigating a season of change and new personnel, Slay’s veteran presence would provide much-needed stability, helping to maintain continuity and ensuring the defense remains a cohesive unit as the Lions pursue another winning season.
