Rey Fenix hasn't been seen on AEW programming for months. The high-flying luchador had reportedly informed Tony Khan that he didn't intend to remain with the company beyond his current contract. His long-time tag partner and brother, Penta, has already left the company and begun making waves in the WWE.
According to Fightful Select, Fenix has now been granted a release from his contract. Now that he's a free agent, it would appear that his WWE debut won't be too far away.
"Rey Fenix is officially a free agent, but likely not for long," Fightful Select reported. "Fightful Select has confirmed that Rey Fenix is now a free agent ... We're told that he's expected to sign with WWE imminently, and Fanatics have already began preparing merchandise for him, with creative coming up with ideas ... Those that we spoke to in WWE said they expect him there, and it was a forgone conclusion that he'd end up in the company. He would likely join the main roster with his brother, Penta."
Fenix will be the latest in a growing line of talent to jump from AEW to WWE. He will join Ricky Saints (formerly Starks), Penta, Jade Cargill, Cody Rhodes, Ethan Page and Shawn Spears, among other former AEW talents now plying their trade for the biggest promotion on the planet.
While losing Fenix and Penta was a blow for AEW, it has helped the company cut its bloated roster. Despite having two TV shows, Dynamite and Collision, multiple wrestlers under contract struggled to earn television time. Allowing disgruntled or rarely-used wrestlers to leave is smart business, as it allows more focus on the current roster stars.
Fenix will likely be a hit in WWE. He gives them another high-flyer and his partnership with Penta will rapidly improve the tag division. Yes, AEW has lost another high-level talent, but in the end, this move makes sense for both sides, after all, Fenix wanted out.
Now, it will be interesting to see how he slots into WWE programming and what creative is planned for him.
