The Phoenix Suns entered the 2024-25 NBA season with championship ambitions, anchored by Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.
However, injuries, inconsistent play and chemistry issues have derailed their campaign, leaving them at 28-33 and outside the Western Conference playoff picture.
Amid the disappointment, one unexpected bright spot has emerged: Bol Bol.
The 7-foot-3 center has bounced around the league, previously spending time with the Denver Nuggets and Orlando Magic, as well as the Chicago Bulls’ G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls. Long viewed as a raw talent with untapped potential, Bol had struggled to find extended opportunities. But in Phoenix, he has capitalized on his chance, particularly with injuries depleting the roster.
A breakout moment came on Feb. 28 in a win over the New Orleans Pelicans, where he erupted for 25 points and knocked down a career-high five three-pointers, falling just one point short of his career-best scoring mark. His ability to space the floor has been particularly eye-catching, shooting 38.5 percent from deep in the six games he has started this season. During those starts, he has averaged 17.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and two blocks per game.

Bol’s defensive presence has also been notable. In back-to-back games against the Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies on Feb. 8 and 11, respectively, he recorded four blocks in each contest, showcasing his shot-altering ability. Against Memphis, he added 14 rebounds, further highlighting his all-around impact. Even in limited minutes, he has consistently provided energy, length and a disruptive defensive presence.
Long criticized for inconsistency and a lack of physicality, the towering big is playing with greater engagement, demonstrating flashes of dominance on both ends of the floor. His unique combination of size, ball-handling, shooting and rim protection makes him an intriguing asset in today’s game. His confidence appears to be growing, and with extended minutes, he is proving that he can be more than just a role player.
While the Suns’ season remains in flux, Bol’s emergence offers a rare silver lining. His performances could secure him a long-term role in Phoenix or make him a valuable trade asset in the offseason. Still just 25 years old, he possesses significant upside, whether with the Suns or another team.
For a team that has underwhelmed, Bol Bol’s rise stands as one of the few positives. If he continues on this trajectory, he may prove to be more than just an anomaly — he could become a legitimate difference-maker in the NBA.
