Klay Thompson must be wondering what he signed up for with Mavericks

Klay Thompson joined the Dallas Mavericks during the offseason. He left the Golden State Warriors, a team with which he enjoyed plenty of success earlier in his career.

Thompson's decision-making process was solid. The Mavericks were coming off an NBA Finals appearance. They had Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving leading the way. Thompson's floor-spacing seemed to be the missing ingredient for the Mavericks to go one step further in the coming years.

However, just a few months into Thompson's tenure with the Mavericks, GM Nico Harrison decided Doncic wasn't the star Dallas needed. So, with a gutsy phone call to Rob Pelinka and the Los Angeles Lakers, Doncic was sent packing and Anthony Davis headed to Texas in return.

Davis lasted less than one game before getting injured.

On Monday, Irving suffered an injury in the opening quarter of Dallas' 122-98 loss to the Sacramento Kings. ESPN's Shams Charania has since reported that Irving will be out for the remainder of the season with an ACL tear.

"Dallas Mavericks All-Star Kyrie Irving has suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee, the team announced Tuesday while expressing optimism the veteran guard will 'come back stronger than ever,'" Charania reported.

Davis is also on the injury list with no return in sight, and, to make matters worse, young guard Jaden Hardy is set to miss time with an ankle sprain.

If Doncic was still in Dallas, head coach Jason Kidd's team could have stood a chance in the postseason. Thompson's scoring ability and defense would have opened things up for the heliocentric star. Instead, Thompson is the most senior member of the rotation moving forward. A season that promised so much is now set to end with a whimper.

Thompson must be wondering what he's gotten himself into. Since early February, the Mavericks have been the picture of dysfunction. Not only did they trade Doncic, but they also essentially launched a media campaign to justify their actions. They escorted a fan out of the arena after he mouthed the words "fire Nico" into a camera. To add further insult, the front office is reportedly planning on raising season-ticket prices.

After spending his career in the Bay Area, Thompson is getting a firsthand lesson on what life away from the Warriors is really like. While it's too late for him to go back to Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, he may be quietly ruing his choice to join the Mavericks, especially as there's no sign of things getting better any time soon.
