What did the Canucks want in return for Brock Boeser?

The Vancouver Canucks were unable to get a trade done on Friday involving forward Brock Boeser and now thanks to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, we know why.

Leading up to the National Hockey League's trade deadline, the Canucks were unable to come to terms on a contract extension with Boeser and it seemed like a trade was likely.

However, Canucks GM Patrik Allvin told reporters after the deadline that the value wasn't there on Boeser and if he told them some of the offers he received, they wouldn't believe him.

During his Saturday Headlines segment on "Hockey Night in Canada," Friedman shared that Allvin was seeking a first-round pick in exchange for Boeser.

"Yeah, I just wanted to get to the bottom of it. It was a really odd media conference yesterday and I'm sure Boeser wasn't happy with some of the things that were said. But I just tried to get to the bottom of it. Like what happened there?" Friedman said.

He added, "The Vancouver Canucks indicated nothing less than a first-rounder for Boeser. They weren't taking anything less than a first-rounder and they didn't get it, so they decided to hold the player and we'll see where it goes from here."

It's understandable that Allvin had such a high price set for Boeser, especially after seeing what he's capable of last season with a 40-goal, 70+ point campaign and even this year, he's on pace for 25+ goals.

However, looking around post-trade deadline, while there were a fair number of first-round picks dealt over the last week, most of them were either involved in bigger packages, to acquire a centerman, or in a rare case, two first-rounders for a bonafide star in Mikko Rantanen.

By not getting a first-round pick and holding onto Boeser, the Canucks now run the risk of losing the 28-year-old for nothing as soon as the free agency window opens up at on July 1.

Allvin and the Canucks also have the opportunity to continue to work on a potential contract extension with Boeser and his camp to avoid the situation detailed above.

It's going to be interesting to see where things go on this front over the next few months, but for now, the Canucks are focused on their goal of making it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
