Commanders going all-in with trade for five-time Pro Bowl OT

The opening day of the NFL's "legal tampering period" has not disappointed when it comes to blockbuster deals.

Instead of landing a notable free agent, the Washington Commanders made another blockbuster trade to bolster their offense.

Houston Texans offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil is heading to the nation's capital in exchange for a package of 2025 and 2026 draft picks. Washington also received a 2025 fourth-round selection as part of the deal (h/t ESPN's Adam Schefter).

Tunsil still has two years left on his contract and will come with a $21.35M salary cap hit next season.

It's the second major trade general manager Adam Peters has agreed to make this offseason. The team will also be acquiring San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, a deal made on March 1.

On top of those exchanges, Washington also re-signed major pieces of its NFC Championship-qualifying team and will add former New York Jets DT Javon Kinlaw to the mix.

These are obvious "all-in" moves being made by an organization that looked like it was in rebuild mode after the 2023 season.

Drafting quarterback Jayden Daniels, the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year, injected immediate success into the team and now has it well ahead of schedule competitively.

Peters appears to be taking advantage of that and wasting no time surrounding Daniels with championship-caliber talent.

Tunsil, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, will provide Washington's franchise QB with much needed protection which, in turn, will make the team's offense that much more dangerous.

Daniels was sacked 47 times in 2024, the sixth-most in the league. Limiting that kind of damage and risk of injury will only increase Washington's chances of challenging the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East.
