Three storylines for the Players Championship

Three storylines for the Players Championship: Scheffler three-peat incoming?

The PGA Tour heads to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, for the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass this week. Check out the three biggest storylines leading up to the "fifth major."

Can Scottie Scheffler make history with a three-peat?

Scheffler enters The Players as the odds-on favorite (+400 at FanDuel) to win the tournament, and it's easy to see why. The World No. 1 is coming off back-to-back Players Championship victories, winning by five strokes in 2023 and one in 2024. He shot a final-round 64 last year to erase a seven-shot deficit and edge out Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman.

Scheffler might be the best player in the world, but history isn't on his side in his quest to three-peat at TPC Sawgrass. There have been only six three-peats on the PGA Tour since 2000, and none since Steve Stricker went back-to-back-to-back at the John Deere Classic from 2009-11. Can Scheffler etch his name in the history books this week?

Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas aim to end lengthy slumps

It's hard to believe how long it's been since Morikawa or Thomas won a golf tournament. Morikawa's last victory came at the 2023 Zozo Championship, while Thomas hasn't won since the 2022 PGA Championship. The two have combined to record 17 top-five finishes during this drought.

This could be the week one of them finally returns to the winner's circle.

Morikawa already has two runner-up finishes this season and ranks second on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained in 2025. He's a perfect fit for TPC Sawgrass as a deadly accurate driver and precision iron player, but can he get over the Sunday scaries? As for Thomas, we know he's an excellent fit for this golf course, as he came from behind to win The Players in 2021.

Keep your drive low on No. 6!

TPC Sawgrass added a fun wrinkle to the tournament this year by planting a 500,000-pound tree right in front of the tee box on the par-4 sixth hole. Players must use their best stingers to keep their tee shots under the overhanging, arch-shaped limb.

This will be a fun hole to watch all week.
