Mavericks guard making the most of unexpected minutes

The Dallas Mavericks have been forced to adjust quickly, as injuries have depleted their roster and pushed lesser-known players into prominent roles. One of the biggest beneficiaries has been guard Brandon Williams, who has capitalized on increased minutes following Kyrie Irving’s season-ending injury.

Signed to a two-way contract, Williams has become a crucial piece amid the Mavericks’ injury woes. With key players such as Irving, Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II sidelined, Dallas has leaned on its depth, and Williams has responded.

The 25-year-old has dominated in the G League this season, averaging 28.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game with the Texas Legends. His performance in the developmental league has reinforced the belief that he belongs at the NBA level. Before this season, Williams had appeared in just 41 NBA games since going undrafted in 2021.

His recent performances suggest he could carve out a more permanent role. On Mar. 1, he erupted for a career-high 31 points in a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, shooting 10-of-15 from the field, hitting four three-pointers, and adding five rebounds, six assists and a steal.

In his most recent outing on March 12, he put up 19 points and six assists against the San Antonio Spurs, proving his value to a short-handed Mavericks squad.

Since the All-Star break, Williams has averaged 16.4 points and 5.2 assists while shooting an impressive 52.7 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from beyond the arc. His ability to create shots, finish at the rim, and space the floor has made him a valuable contributor to Dallas’ backcourt rotation.

Williams’ journey to Dallas has been anything but conventional. After going undrafted in 2021, he spent time in the G League with the Westchester Knicks before earning an opportunity with the Portland Trail Blazers. In 24 games with Portland during the 2021-22 season, he averaged 12.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists, flashing the potential that has resurfaced in Dallas.

While his long-term role remains uncertain, Williams has made a strong case for extended minutes due to his two-way impact. If he continues to capitalize on his opportunities, he could become a valuable contributor for the Mavericks — or even draw interest from teams needing backcourt depth.
