One of the biggest stars in the world of professional golf is Rory McIlroy, a player who has won major championships and been at or near the top of the sport for over a decade. While a place of prominence is coveted by many, it comes with downsides as well.
One of those downsides are hecklers and backlash.
During one of his practice rounds leading up to The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass earlier this week, McIlroy was met by a heckling fan after one of his tee shots. Instead of ignoring the fan — who turned out to be University of Texas golfer Luke Potter — McIlroy confronted him, took his phone and had security remove Potter.
After his first round on Thursday, McIlroy was asked about the interaction by media members, and he declined to comment on the situation.
Texas golfer shouted “just like 2011 at Augusta” after Rory hit it in the water on his first ball and after his second shot Rory did this. What a crash out @stoolpresidente @ziregolf pic.twitter.com/UtHdO4UNOg

All of this has led to some serious backlash for McIlroy, as many golf fans are upset with the way that he handled the situation. While many are in agreement that the heckler — who later issued a public apology — was in the wrong for his part in the dispute, there is a sense that McIlroy should have handled things better.
Gotta be honest: Rory taking the phone & his reaction to the media’s question about it is all part of the reason he won’t win another major without a complete mental overhaul. The lack of accountability is jarring.pic.twitter.com/XaOroxQN3U

While this incident provided some drama early in the week, it doesn't seem to have impacted McIlroy's play once the tournament began. He opened the week with a first-round 67 (5-under par) on Thursday and followed it up with a 4-under 68 in the second round.
While play is ongoing in the second round at TPC Sawgrass, McIlroy currently sits in a tie for fourth place at 9-under for the tournament. While his place may change throughout the day, the fact remains that he stands in a good position to make a run at a Players Championship over the weekend.
Regardless of what happens, though, it's clear that he made himself a polarizing figure with his actions earlier in the week.
