No. 5 seed Wisconsin advances to Big Ten championship game

The Wisconsin Badgers will be in the Big 10 Championship Game for the second straight season.

The fifth-seeded Badgers knocked off No. 1 seed Michigan State 79-77 on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals.

Missed free throws late in the game gave Michigan State a chance to tie it with a late three, but John Tonje knocked the ball away and secured the win for the Badgers.

Tonje's 32 points were a Wisconsin record for points in a Big 10 tournament game. He scored 14 in the first half and 18 in the second to help lead his team to the win. Along with his 32, Tonje grabbed seven rebounds and dished out two assists.

John Blackwell was in double figures with 14 points, and Carter Gilmore scored 10. Along with his 10 points, Gilmore added five rebounds, five assists, three blocks and a steal.

With the loss, Michigan State will have to wait another year for its first conference tournament championship since 2019. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak.

Jase Richardson led the Spartans with 21 points, including four three-pointers. Richardson was the only Michigan State player with multiple makes from beyond the arc.

Jeremy Fears (14 points) and Tre Holloman (10 points off the bench) were also in double figures. Jaden Akins was held to just six points, well below his team-leading average of 12.9 points per game.

Wisconsin will now await the winner of the Michigan-Maryland semifinal game to see who they will face in the championship game on Sunday.
