Watch: CBS begins Selection Sunday with touching Greg Gumbel tribute

Coverage of the NCAA Tournament will once again feel a lot different this year without the late Greg Gumbel, and CBS found a great way to pay tribute to the broadcasting legend on Sunday.

At the start of their "Selection Sunday" special on Sunday evening, CBS aired a brief but touching tribute to Gumbel. The selection show began with a clip of Gumbel talking about what makes the NCAA Tournament so special.

"What's special about the tournament is, aside from the fact, and under normal circumstances it should be enough, but aside from the fact that it brings the best teams in the country together to play head-to-head, there is also that possibility that someone unexpected will come out of the blue. If you like basketball, there's no better place to be," Gumbel said.

CBS then kicked off its coverage with "Start Me Up" by The Rolling Stones playing in the background. That was also part of the Gumbel tribute, as the former host loved The Rolling Stones.

Gumbel died in December at 78 following a battle with cancer. He was best known for being the CBS studio host for March Madness. Gumbel was also a play-by-play announcer for NFL games with the network at two different points during his legendary career. He held other roles covering Major League Baseball, college basketball, college baseball and the Olympics.

Fans missed Gumbel when he was absent from last year's NCAA Tournament coverage, and that will be the case again this year. CBS will likely pay tribute to Gumbel on more than one occasion during March Madness, and deservedly so.
