Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr. becomes latest star from stacked 2019 LSU squad to secure a massive extension

Nearly six years after winning a national championship at LSU, cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. and his college teammates are making major coin in the NFL.

On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted the Houston Texans and Stingley agreed to a three-year, $90M extension with $89M guaranteed. The deal makes him the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL.

"That 2019 LSU team continues to cement its mark as maybe the greatest team ever," ESPN's Ben Baby wrote on his X account after Stingley's signing.

During the 2019 season, LSU went 15-0 and led the FBS in yards per game (568.4) and points per game (48.4).

It also featured players who would become NFL stars, including Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase and Minnesota Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson.

According to Baby, the total value of the second contracts for Burrow, Chase, Jefferson and Stingley equals $666M.

Chase, of course, became the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history when he signed a four-year, $161M extension with the Bengals on Sunday.

In December 2023, Fox Sports' Joel Klatt ranked the 2019 LSU Tigers as his fourth-best college football team since 2000, behind the 2004 USC Trojans, 2005 Texas Longhorns and 2001 Miami Hurricanes.

The 2001 Hurricanes produced a record 38 NFL Draft picks and Pro Football Hall of Famers in safety Ed Reed and WR Andre Johnson.

Still, the former LSU stars are in their primes and should keep adding to their impressive résumés.

Burrow, Chase and Jefferson have made multiple Pro Bowls throughout their careers. During his third season in 2024, Stingley made his first Pro Bowl and earned a first-team All-Pro nod.

It's unsurprising many of the stars from LSU's 2019 squad are now among the highest-paid players in the league. The team was clearly stacked.
