Connor McDavid broke this NHL record before Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby

NHL fans have their eyes locked on Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin this season and his chase for Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record.

But Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid just did something no other player in league history has done, not even Gretzky.

On Tuesday, the 28-year-old recorded three points (one goal, two assists) against the Utah Hockey Club.

With that performance in Edmonton's emphatic 7-1 victory, McDavid became the first player in NHL history to record a three-point game against 32 different franchises.

He broke a tie with Ovechkin, Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon, the Tampa Bay Lightning's Nikita Kucherov and the Detroit Red Wings' Patrick Kane at 31.

Because Utah debuted as a new team this season after leaving the Arizona Coyotes behind in Phoenix (another team McDavid has three points against), that created the extra opportunity for the Oilers star.

Before this year, the only way McDavid could've broken that tie would have been to leave Edmonton and score against his old club.

It's an incredible feat considering players like Ovechkin and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby have been playing a lot longer and rank well ahead of McDavid in points.

But those two have also only played for a single club. Gretzky played with four different franchises over 20 seasons, owns the all-time points record (2,857) and still never cracked three points against more than 29 teams.

It's just yet another reminder that Ovechkin isn't the only history maker in the league this year.
