First Four loss to Xavier could reportedly cost Texas HC Rodney Terry his job

Entering the NCAA Tournament, Texas Longhorns head coach Rodney Terry likely needed a deep run to save his job.

After the Longhorns lost to the Xavier Musketeers 86-80 in the First Four in Dayton, Ohio, on Wednesday night, expect the program to make a change soon.

On his X account, Field of 68 co-founder Jeff Goodman wrote, "Texas is likely to make a move on Terry after two straight years of barely making the NCAA [Tournament] and getting bounced in the First Four this year."

Goodman noted that Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte targeted Xavier head coach Sean Miller before he promoted Terry in March 2023 and suggested he might do that again.

In his first season with the program, Terry guided the Longhorns to an Elite Eight appearance. Since then, it has lost momentum under the HC.

In his second season, Texas regressed. The Longhorns finished 21-13 and were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. This season, the Longhorns finished 19-16 and 6-12 in SEC play.

Terry's struggles over the past two seasons probably don't tie to a lack of talent. This season, they had star freshman guard Tre Johnson. In Tankathon's latest mock draft, the Philadelphia 76ers take him with pick No. 5.

Still, Terry and his staff have struggled to maximize their stars, which was apparent in Wednesday's night game against Xavier.

The Musketeers were down by 13 in the first half and still trailed by 10 with less than 14 minutes remaining in the second half. However, they mounted a comeback led by senior guard Marcus Foster, who scored 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Xavier also generated 16 points off 10 turnovers by Texas.

While Terry's 62-36 record with the Longhorns is decent, a coaching change doesn't seem unwarranted. He has yet to capitalize on the promise he showed at the beginning of his tenure.
