Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty climbed the mountain for the first time in 2024, becoming WNBA champions after they beat the Minnesota Lynx in a thrilling five-game Finals series. The three-time All-Star hit a game-winner in Game 3 of the Finals, and now she knows exactly what it takes to win it all.
The WNBA continues to grow at a rapid pace, and while it was a monumental achievement to win it last season, Ionescu knows that the challenges that lie ahead will be even greater. In a recent interview, the star opened up on what the Liberty's title defense will look like.
“I would say probably the hardest thing to have to do is win your first one: that pressure of not having done it yet and then finally doing it,” Sabrina Ionescu said, as per the South China Moving Post.
“But I would say defending one is probably just as hard. Everyone understands that you won the year before and you have to be better than you were that last year.”
She added, "My goal is to win another championship, but you know, it’s going to be the hardest one I’ve had to win. The continuing growth in our league is a different nuance as well, because there’s series that we’ve never played in and having to figure that out. So I’m excited for the challenge for sure.”
Ionescu is entering her sixth season in the WNBA, and she played her best basketball in 2024. The Liberty guard averaged 18.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game and finished sixth in MVP voting.
There is sure to be a target on the New York Liberty's back going into the 2025 season, but it seems they already know that. The Liberty and Ionescu will begin their title defense on May 17 against the Las Vegas Aces.
