A report from earlier in March indicated that one reason the San Francisco 49ers haven't yet locked quarterback Brock Purdy down via a lucrative contract extension is that Purdy "wants a lot" of money from 49ers CEO Jed York.
Taylor Mouser served as an offensive quality control coach and an assistant when Purdy featured for the Iowa State Cyclones before Mouser was promoted to the role of offensive coordinator in 2024. Mouser recently spoke with Jason Aponte of Niners Nation about what isn't yet a contract standoff but could become a messy situation before summer rolls around.
"Brock’s a team-first guy," Mouser explained. "I’m sure he hates all of it and all, like, the talk that’s behind it because he just wants to play football, and I’m sure he is letting his agent do his thing. ...I promise, like, money is the farthest thing, you know, from driving that guy. You know, he doesn’t care about it. I know that there’s a part of it that will take care of itself and he knows where he stands in the grand aspect of things. But he’s certainly not the kind of guy that’s going to stretch the pennies in that organization one way or the other."
Most fans understandably assume the 49ers' salary-cap-clearing activities of the offseason were related to the club eventually paying Purdy. That likely will be the case when all is said and done, and Purdy's camp may be simply waiting for the Las Vegas Raiders and Geno Smith to finalize terms of an extension to ensure that the 2023 regular-season MVP finalist gets a better deal than Smith.
With each day that passes without Purdy putting pen to paper on an extension, words like "holdout" continue to hover over the 49ers. Mouser indicated Purdy will only need to earn so much money over his career that began when the 25-year-old entered the league as the final pick of the 2022 draft.
"He’ll go somewhere at the end of his career," Mouser added about Purdy. "He’ll go live in Illinois and just fish every day, and you don’t need a ton of money to do that. So I’m sure if there is a hold-up...I promise it’s not because of Brock."
Purdy theoretically could play on the final year of his inexpensive rookie contract, but both he and the 49ers have reasons to want to sign an extension before he takes the field in September. There's no known deadline for negotiations between the sides, but one wonders if he'll begin to feel disrespected if the 49ers don't meet his camp's asking price through all of April.
