Colorado State upsets Memphis, is fourth double-digit seed to advance in March Madness

Another 12-seed is dancing in March Madness.

On Friday, Colorado State toppled fifth-seeded Memphis 78-70 to advance to the second round for the first time since 2013.

The team has now won 11 consecutive games while sophomore Kyan Evans converted a program record six three-pointers in the historic victory over the Tigers.

The Rams, champions of the Mountain West Conference, join McNeese State as the only 12-seeds to win a first-round game at the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The Cowboys took down 5-seed Clemson 69-67 in the Midwest Region on Thursday.

The two programs continued a hot trend. Now a 12-seed has advanced in 34 of the last 40 NCAA Tournaments.

Colorado State is the fourth double-digit seed to advance this year so far. Three of those teams (including the Rams) are in the West Region alone. The 11-seed Drake beat 6-seed Missouri 67-57 and 10-seed Arkansas defeated 7-seed Kansas 79-72 on Thursday.

The most double-digit seeds to ever reach the Round of 32 was 10 in 2016.

For as significant as Friday's upset was, it was a popular pick for bracket predictors. Per the NCAA, 39.88 percent of submissions selected Colorado State to advance over the American Athletic Conference champions.

Despite that, a much smaller number of people have correctly picked every game so far. Just 0.0188 percent of submitted brackets remain perfect after the Rams' win.

Colorado State now awaits the winner of 4-seed Maryland and 13-seed Grand Canyon on Friday. That second-round matchup will be played on Sunday.
